Have you ever encountered individuals that appear to be in love with the sound of their own voice. I have; and sadly many of these people are in leadership positions. Be careful that when you're speaking there's more than just hot air flowing, let there also be substance. It hard enough to keep the attention of others even when you're providing information that people need. I feel that things are this way because so many speakers have little or no substance being conveyed. Listening is the key aspect of communication. Communication is not always about talking, it's about connecting. Before you speak there should be a need for what you are speaking about. By a need I mean, does anybody care, is it useful content, etc. As a leader, speaking also has to do with giving respect to your audience. Have you ever been in a room and new unfamiliar information is being given out and "are there any questions" is asked only to no response. Ok, a lot of that is fear, however some of it is about respect. If a person feel that the speaker doesn't respect my input; they won't comment, not even for clarity. Develop respectful relationships with your teams so that when you speak they desire to listen and vice versa. Not enough leaders respect the potential leaders around them. Remember as a leader you must learn to see the big picture, which includes those around you. If you can't value the people around you, why are they there? So leaders, get busy getting over yourself and learn to listen more. In turn, you will teach your potential leaders to do the same.
Helpful tips 1. You must know how to listen. 2. Don't fall in love with your own voice, talk about things that add value, not just empty rhetoric. 3. Don't monopolize the conversation. Conversation means interaction.
